Google for Korea
Celebrating 20 Years
2024
Google for Korea is an annual event recognizing the partnership between Google and Korea in culture and innovation. This year’s event was extra special, as it marked the 20th anniversary of Google Korea.
To celebrate this milestone, we set out to create five short animations—each representing a letter in "KOREA" and inspired by traditional Korean themes. While some of our favorite scenes didn't make it into the final version, we're delighted to share this director's cut. From concept to final execution, we dedicated ourselves to bringing these cultural symbols to life with creativity.
Embracing Cultural Essence
We focused on five distinctive elements that capture Korea's heritage :
- Gwanghwamun 광화문 : Featuring this iconic Seoul gate alongside city’s landmarks.
- Bangpae Yeon 방패연 : A uniquely Korean kite design with playful colors.
- Samulnori 사물놀이 : A traditional percussion ensemble depicted through instruments like the drum and Janggu.
- Red Pine 소나무 : The national tree, symbolizing evergreen spirit.
- Hangeul 한글 : Highlighting the geometric beauty of the Korean alphabet.
Reimagining Traditions
Our goal was to make these elements instantly recognizable with a modern twist. We experimented with layouts, forms, and color palettes—from geometric to organic shapes and from vibrant contemporary hues to traditional tones—to breathe new life into these cultural symbols.
